As a long-time resident of Redwood City, I have been active in the community for many years. As an owner and Business Manager of The Kastrop Group, Architects, located in downtown Redwood City, I am interested in the economic vitality that an excellent school system can provide in terms of the employee pool, and increased property values.
It is as a parent, however, that I choose to devote myself to education as a focus for my volunteer activities. When my children were in preschool, I became active in parent participation nursery schools. I first served on my children's nursery school board, then the San Mateo Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools as Vice-President and President. I was elected to the Board of the California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools (CCPPNS) in 1994. CCPPNS boasts a membership of over 9,000 member families and over 200 preschools. Now completing my second term as President of CCPPNS, I am familiar with educational issues, diverse parental and school needs, working with the Board to serve a large membership, and controlling the budget. CCPPNS has also provided me with a considerable amount of leadership training. I have conducted several leadership training workshops for incoming school board members. I have been selected to serve as Leader of the Citizen Ambassador Program's Cooperative Preschools Delegation to South Africa in August 1998, sponsored by People-to-People International.
I have continued my leadership development in the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Redwood City/Belmont program, graduating in 1996. I have served on the Chamber's Education Committee for about 3 years, working on such projects as school-business partnerships, and a speakers bureau. I worked on the successful Measure A bond campaign, which provided funding for new classrooms, libraries, and multi-purpose rooms at all of the Redwood City School District sites.
I have experience working with both city government and administration, serving on the Redwood City Housing and Human Concerns Committee since February, 1996, and as Vice-Chair in 1997.
I am also a co-founder and past-President of the Redwood City Mothers Club, a support group for parents of children from birth to age 5.
I will be retiring from the Board and Presidency of CCPPNS this year. It is obvious that I enjoy community service activities, and am looking forward to the new challenge of serving on the Redwood City School Board.
