I am a 34-year old attorney specializing in employment discrimination and business litigation. I was elected to the MMWD Board four years ago, with the strong support of the environmental community and ratepayers who felt that MMWD was out of touch. They were right. A spendthrift MMWD Board had voted to raise rates more than 50% over five years. Thousands of dollars were wasted on perks, while critical problems like improving "fire flow" were ignored. Rather than protecting fish habitat in Lagunitas Creek, MMWD was locked in a decade-long lawsuit against state environmental authorities. I promised to change all of that, and I'm proud to say four years later that I kept my promises. My first vote was to repeal the prior Board's rate increase and implement a hiring freeze. Since then, we have steadily reduced MMWD's budget while maintaining one of the highest water quality systems in California. We've reorganized senior management and reduced staff from 251 to 233 employees. I spearheaded the "fire flow" campaign, under which MMWD is now committed to what Fire Chiefs call "the most important public safety measure in the last 20 years." I've pushed for aggressive water conservation, and I personally traveled to Sacramento to end the litigation over Lagunitas Creek. Today, MMWD is a leaner, more responsive public agency. Let's work together in the next four years to keep MMWD on track. |
