With an unparalleled record of leadership in technology, public education and community service, Ron Gonzales is uniquely suited to lead San Jose as its next Mayor. As an Education Program Manager with Hewlett-Packard Company, Gonzales currently leads a national education initiative that established partnerships between Hewlett-Packard, local school districts, and universities in four cities (San Jose, Boston, El Paso and Los Angeles). The goal of this groundbreaking program is to improve math and science education at all grade levels. Additionally, Gonzales seeks to increase the number of women and minority students that are accepted into college degree programs in engineering and computer science. His experience in the technology industry provides the management skills necessary for effective public service. Gonzales previously served for eight years (1989-1996) on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, where he oversaw a $1.8 billion budget and 15,000 employees. He was a recognized leader in his efforts to reduce toxic pollution; improve the regional transportation system; and reduce crime. As Chair of the Board of Supervisors, Gonzales also introduced technology into county government and launched an innovative performance-based budgeting system. Gonzales attended local public schools and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He graduated from the Mayor's Leadership Program at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. He is also an American Leadership Forum Fellow. Gonzales is involved in numerous civic organizations and is especially proud to be the founder of The Role Model Program, an effort that recruits adult role models to regularly visit local middle schools. He is a recent recipient of the Points of Light Award, a national honor given to individuals who have made significant contributions to their community. Ron and his wife, Alvina, live in San Jose. They have three adult daughters. |
