Jobs - Housing Balance

By Eugene R. "Gene" Mullin

Candidate for Council Member; City of South San Francisco

How to create affordable housing in one of the highest housing markets in the United States.
It is clear that gridlock will continue to increase if methods to create affordable housing are not developed. While this is clearly a regional problem, exacerbated by communities that continually add jobs but no housing, there are some small steps South San Francisco is making.

In the past year, we have approved, or have seen build some 800 units, keeping our jobs/housing balance intact. While the bulk of these new units are high priced (mid-$300M and up) about 1/2 of the purchasers are already residents of the North Peninsula. As they upgrade, they put their lower priced homes on the market, thus opening opportunities at these lower prices for purchasers.

We are also focusing on "smart-growth" or in-fill housing in our community, approving projects in neighborhoods which already have full service components such as schools, retail outlets, churches and the like.

We are hopeful of having the new housing filled by employees in the North Peninsula area, and continuing to do our part to stay ahead of the type of traffic congestion commonplace in other areas of San Mateo County.
