Everyone Has A Role To Play!

5 Basic Promises Made To Every Child In America!

Research On The Impact Of These Promises Is Compelling!

All youth in America deserve opportunities to lead happy, healthy and productive lives. Everyone has a role to play--families, neighbors, associations, youth organizations, human service agencies, religious institutions, schools, businesses, corporations, foundations, government and youth themselves.

I support the objectives of America's Promise--The Alliance For Youth, a national campaign under the direction of General Colin L. Powell USA (ret). At the heart of America's Promise is a set of five basic promises made to every child in America. They are:

1) An ongoing relationship with a caring adult--
parent, mentor, tutor or coach.

2) A safe place with structured activities during
non-school hours.

3) A healthy start (nutritional food).

4) A marketable skill through effective education; and

5) An opportunity to give back through community
service.

Research on the impact of these promises is compelling. Children and young people who have these promises are less likely to engage in negative behaviors, including: alcohol abuse, tobacco and drug use, teen pregnancy, dropping out of school, domestic violence and attempted suicide.

As Congressman, I will work to fulfill these basic promises to our youth in our district's communties by utilizing available resources in both the private and government sectors.

Together, we can make a difference!!!
