Stop the pollution

Our ocean water quality is key to healthy recreational use, protection of the marine environment and the well being or our businesses.
The following actions are necessary to protect ocean waters:
1. The city should collaborate with the water district to implement a water conservation plan to eliminate excess irrigation watering that transports pollutants to the ocean.
2. Adopt a community wide campaign to stop the release of pollutants into storm drains.
3. Clean storm drain catch basins at least twice a year.
4. Complete diversion of non-rainy season runoff into the sewer system.
5. Clean city streets at least once a week.
6. Identify and elimnate the sources of pollution in Laguna Canyon Creek and Aliso Creek.
7. Enforce the city's water quality ordinance.

Sewage Spills
1. Minimize sewer overflows caused by roots and grease by educating residents and businesses how to prevent such blockages in their private sewer lines.
2. Require food service businesses to have grease elimination systems.
3. Conduct a full video inspection of the city's sewer collection system. Repair/replace problems as soon as practicable.
4. Implement back-up systems to contain sewer spills before they reach the beach.
5. Adopt meaningful and dynamic sewer spill prevention and emergency response plans.
