Fullerton police officers and firefighters must be prepared to face the challenges ahead. As a law enforcement manager responsible for the fourth largest law enforcement agency in Orange County, I am aware of the challenges unique to public safety. I will work to maintain a well trained and properly compensated police and fire department. This is vital for law enforcement and firefighters to deal with the advancing technology and upcoming baby boom era. Crime is down on a national basis and Fullerton has enjoyed a safer community. The census bureau however, has warned us that by the year 2010, there will be more people age 14-28 years old, then the rest of the population. This is the age that is responsible for 80% of all quality of life crimes. What does that mean for Fullerton and the nation? More crime and greater challenges! We should not assume that since crime is down, it will remain that way. We should keep up with the advancing technologies in the field of law enforcement and fire safety and be ready to meet the challenges ahead. Criminals are becoming more sophisticated, and fire fighting technology and emergency medical service is becoming more complex and advanced. Along with this comes huge potential liability issues for Fullerton. By maintaining a properly trained and compensated group of police officers and firefighters, we can ensure public safety and maintain the professionalism we currently enjoy. We will not become a training ground or platform for new public safety employees to use as an interim position. Pride in ownership speaks volumes. Let's support our public safety professionals and give them the tools to properly protect us. |
