Support of Community Initiated Programs NeededBy Lance R. MacLeanCandidate for Member, City Council; City of Mission Viejo | |

The city must work cooperatively with community organizations to support recreation programs. Our family oriented community boasts some of the best neighborhood parks and youth sport recreation programs in all of Orange County. These facilities and sports programs meet the needs of many of our youths including the recently built city skate facility at Beebe Park. Continuing to provide these facilities and services is a priority that I would continue to advocate for as a council member. However, as good as these facilities and programs are, there is still more that can be done to meet the needs of our youth. Many area churches have been organizing youth group activities that include skateboarding competitions, half-pipe demonstrations and musical entertainment that have been tremendously successful. Yet the city has deemed these events to be a nuisance and now requires complicated and expensive special event permits to be filed and approved. While the city permit process is appropriate to help mitigate potential impacts such as traffic and noise, the city should be working with these sponsoring organizations in a spirit of cooperation to encourage these safe and well supervised community events for our youths. As a council member I would support special events of this nature and direct city staff to advise and assist in the presentation of conscientious and popular entertainment. |
