--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mayor Miguel Pulido was born in Mexico City in 1956. At the age of five, his family moved to Placentia, California. Mr. Pulido's father, Miguel, Sr., owned a garage for a short while in Fullerton, where the younger Miguel went to school. His first year at Commonwealth Elementary School was hard, he says, primarily because of the difficulties encountered in learning a new language. At home, his father insisted that the children speak Spanish so they would not forget their Hispanic heritage. Soon however, Miguel, his two brothers, Jose and Luis, and sister Marisol were all fluent in their adopted tongue.
At age 13, he started working at the family business, Ace Muffler, and years later, comments on how important this experience was for him. Having developed an interest in sports, Miguel was active in water polo and cross country activities at Troy High School. He also played on the school's varsity tennis team, and was active in the physics, chess and math clubs. He studied Spanish and French, so that upon graduation he was awarded scholarships in French, general studies and tennis.
Miguel then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Cal State Fullerton. During his senior year, he organized a solar energy fair and received job offers from several of the participating companies. He accepted a position with Tustin-based McCaughey & Smith Energy Associates, where he directed a computer program on contract with the federal government. Three years later, he was vice president of the company, and annual sales had risen from $30,000 to $400,000.
Miguel eventually left McCaughey & Smith Energy Associates to become a consultant. His experience with the City on behalf of his father's business, Ace Muffler, triggered an interest to run for the Council seat in Ward 4. He ran, and was elected to the Santa Ana City Council on November 4, 1986. He was elected twice to the position of Mayor Pro Tem in 1990 and 1992, and became Mayor in 1994. He is currently serving his third term to this elected position.
Mayor Pulido and his wife Laura are proud parents of Miguel Robert and David Andrew. He enjoys chess, backgammon, tennis, and playing the guitar. He is also trilingual in French, English and Spanish.
Miguel serves on the following Boards:
Orange County Transportation Authority
Orange County Water District (1998 - 1999)
World Trade Center Association Los Angeles # Long Beach
Orange County International Trade Center Advisory Council
Federal Inter-Governmental Policy Advisory Committee on Trade
