Improving our harbor's environment.By Sally CampbellCandidate for Harbor Commissioner; San Mateo County Harbor District | |

Many improvements were made years ago and need to be updated. A case in point is the Pillar Point outter breakwater. The Pillar Point outer breakwater, which was built over quarter of a century ago, should be opened up to encourage better water circulation. The current configuration has caused severe erosion of our beaches and negatively affects the oxygen, water clarity and indigenous sea life. The Corps of Engineers acknowledges this problem. With cooperation between the Corps, state and county officials, the Sanctuary and the Harbor Board, this problem can and must be solved. On October 25, it was announced that the Corp of Engineers has officially agreed to start the studies for opening the outer breakwater to allow maximum fresh water flow through Pillar Point Harbor. This essential first step will officially begin our efforts to improve the environment for the area's sea life and begin to reclaim some of our coast line. For user's convenience, gas will soon be available at Oystr Point Marina. Final safety checks are being made and it is estimated that this needed service will be available to all boaters by Nov. 10, 2000. Several year ago, I introduced the concept of ferry service from Oyster Point to San Francisco and the East Bay. The concept took hold and support has grown as the District investigates feasibility, funding and other possible connections. This service will help reduce traffic and air pollution on Highway 101. I have started work on these projects and will continue my efforts until they are completed. As you can see by response from the Corps of Engineers concerning the Pillar Point outer breakwater (detailed in para. 1 above,) the hard work done by this board is beginning to reap rewards. |
