STATE SENATOR SCOTT R. NEIN Scott Nein came to the Ohio Senate in July 1995 when he was appointed to the 4th Senate District seat representing Butler and Preble counties. He won election to the seat in November 1996. Senator Nein currently serves as chairman of the Senate Insurance, Commerce and Labor Committee and as a member of its Commerce and Labor Subcommittee. He also serves as a member of several other key Senate committees including: Ways and Means; the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Pension Systems; Energy, Natural Resources and Environment; and, Rules. Additionally, he is also a member of the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation Oversight Commission and the Unemployment Compensation Advisory Council. Senator Nein has been a leader in the Ohio General Assembly sponsoring key legislative proposals that benefit Ohioans. During the 122nd General Assembly, he sponsored S.B. 53 (to expand the list of offenses for which a criminal or juvenile court may admit videotaped testimony of a child victim), S.B. 154 (to modify Ohio's Insurance Agents Law to simplify and separate the licensing and appointment processes), S.B. 212 (to require administrators and employees of child day camps and residential camps to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect to appropriate authorities), and S.B. 232 (to remove federally licensed providers of wireless phone service from regulation by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio). During the 121st General Assembly, he sponsored Senate Bill 239 (making it a crime to injure or cause the death of a fetus) in response to a tragic automobile accident in Cincinnati that claimed the life of Suzanne Daly and her eight and one-half month old unborn child. In 1996 and again in 1998, Senator Nein was named as a "Watchdog of the Treasury" by the United Conservatives of Ohio for supporting fiscal conservatism in the legislature. In 1998, he also receive the Independent Insurance Agents of Ohio Independence Bell Award and the Middletown Community Civic Award. He was also awarded the Robert E. Hughes Memorial Award in 1996 for his dedication to improving the election process by sponsoring legislation to revise and update state laws regulating elections. Scott Nein began his political career in 1987 when he was elected to the Middletown School Board; three years later, he was elected to serve as its president. Senator Nein has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Middletown Chamber of Commerce and the Butler County Unit of the American Cancer Society, and as president of the Middletown Rotary Club. These positions of trust and responsibility are the result of his hard work and demonstrated commitment to the region. In 1990, at the urging of Congressman John Boehner, Scott Nein made the decision to further his service to his community and run for the Ohio House of Representatives seat previously held by Congressman Boehner. During his third term in the Ohio House, Scott played an integral role as Assistant Majority Leader to House Speaker Jo Ann Davidson. Senator Nein in well known for his commitment to the business community. A former insurance broker, he has consistently demonstrated his ability to comprehend the complex issues of business, education and the environment while working to make southwest Ohio a better place to work, live and raise a family.
