EquityBy Tom ButtCandidate for Mayor; City of Richmond | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
EQUITY is the third of the "Three E's" that is required for a healthy Richmond.Equity means that no one who willing to join in the effort is left out or left behind as Richmond moves forward. It means that the flatlands get the same level of services as the hills and that all citizens have access to government, not just those with money and power. It means that housing opportunities are available for every income level and that those who are motivated to earn a living can find a decent job without spending a significant portion of their life commuting, and if they choose to commute, they have choices other than the automobile. It means that industrial pollution is not concentrated in poor neighborhoods, and if it already is, it means that those neighborhoods deserve our help to continue making the air cleaner, preventing future industrial accidents, and assisting those whose health and economic prospects and have suffered by their previous exposure. Finally, equity is also responsibility and accountability; we all have an obligation to participate in public life some way to ratify our citizenship, even if it only means getting out to vote once a year. As mayor, I will measure every municipal service and initiative by its equity, and I will make sure that all citizens are heard by government, and we respond to those needs, regardless of the source. |
