Position on the Home Depot Issue

By Ken Horton

Candidate for City Council Member; City of Agoura Hills

This information is provided by the candidate
Home Depot is not a good fit for our community. My position was based on extensive research.
When I first pulled my papers for the November 6, 2001 city council election in Agoura Hills, I stated that research and investigation would be the tools I would use to uncover the facts about the issues that are relevant to the citizens of our city.

As I have always done in my business affairs and personal life, I try to find as many facts and details as I can before making final decisions on issues, determining solutions to problems or rendering judgments. I am now prepared to take a stand on several issues that I feel are important enough to build a campaign platform around.

HOME DEPOT

I STRONGLY OPPOSE Home Depot. I don't know if traffic will be a major problem if the traffic infrastructure of the city is improved. I I do know that Home Depot is not a good fit for Agoura Hills. I base my opposition to Home Depot on many facts. Their very aggressive growth plan and a very disturbing business philosophy are only two of the reasons. (Please see the web-site): http://www.sprawl-busters.com/hometown.html

I researched Home Depot's national and international reputation fo being "anti-environmental." That led me to hundreds of articles written by citizens from small towns all across the nation who have previously had negative experiences with bringing Home Depot into their neighborhoods. (please see the websites): Search "http://www.Google.com"- "Responsible Growth".

One of the most powerful and informative sites I found during my research was one that gave an overview of a frightening corporation that has no placein our backyard or our front yard. The website is ironically called: http://www.homedepotsucks.com .

OTHER PLATFORM ISSUES AND CONCERNS

  • Develop a public transportation system that inter-connects Calabasas to the east, Ventura to the west, Malibu to the south and Simi Valley to the North

  • Develop a local and national tourist destination identity for Agoura Hills - Tourist dollars can provide revenue for increasing tax base revenue

  • Form citizens advisory committees to enhance the effectiveness of the Agoura City Council

  • Work with surrounding cities to bring quality businesses into our communities that do not duplicate the ones that already exist

  • Work toward building a kinder and gentler relationship between the city council and the citizens and businesses in the community

  • Hire a grant writer to find private and government funding for our city's special projects
