PHILOSOPHY AND RECORD OF TRUSTEE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In my business career I have had the opportunity to address and deal with the problems of:

• Purchasing supplies and equipment
• Personnel, pensions, accounting and insurance
• Building construction, facilities repair and maintenance
• Labor law, workers compensation, OSHA regulation and hazardous material management

As trustees, the Board's first responsibility is to ensure the fiscal integrity of the district. Their next responsibility is to recruit and hire the best superintendent-president that can be found. Their third responsibility is to help create an environment where he or she can be successful.

The passage of Proposition 13 challenged the management and funding of all public agencies. 22 years ago the Board of Trustees established the Pasadena City College Foundation to develop the outside funding necessary to provide for the college needs that the state could or would not fund. To date the Foundation has raised more than $50 million to acquire property, build facilities, offer faculty grants to enhance instruction and provide matching funds for state authorized building projects.

Our 1990's $110 million master plan was completed on time and on budget, with a great deal of help from the Foundation. The individual projects were; the Shatford Library, the Community Education Center on Foothill Boulevard, a new parking structure on Del Mar Avenue, The Berger Child Development Center, a new two-story gymnasium, a new swimming pool and athletic field. In addition, there were many remodeling and relocation projects that resulted as secondary effects of the overall plan.

This was all accomplished by a very capable administration and a supportive Board of Trustees. Our present Board represents diverse points of view. Philosophically we range from far-right to far-left. We manage to put these differences aside and concentrate on our fiscal responsibilities and our student and staff needs. We have the ever-present challenge of an aging plant and increasing demand.

You have a responsibility to elect trustees who can and will provide the direction and leadership that assures that the college will be responsive to our community needs. We have a tremendous asset in Pasadena City College. I believe the best protection for that investment is to continue the positive support that the present Board majority and I have shown for the College.
