Energy Conservation. Alternative Transportation.

By Keith J. Coffman-Grey

Candidate for Member of City Council; City of Santa Barbara

This information is provided by the candidate
I support the City's current program to distribute energy-efficient lighting to City residents, and have installed them in my own home. I also believe that the City must do more on energy supply, with methods that are environmentally friendly such as solar panels on City buildings that reduce demand for external, fossil fuel sources.

As a City Councilmember, I will use my position to highlight alternative energy supplies such as the "Million Solar Roofs" program that assists with the installation of solar energy systems for residential and commercial properties. I would also promote and publicize the tax incentives (including federal government) that encourage usage of renewable energy sources such as solar power.

Fossil fuel emissions have a significant impact on total carbon dioxide levels, and Santa Barbara has several tools at its disposal to reduce local contributions to global warming. I support the continued expansion of mass transit, clean energy buses, and I will expand electric buses and trolleys where it is feasible.

We need to encourage driving reduction programs, including alternative transportation, carpooling and improved parking. I support discounted bus ticket programs to employees; I would work with businesses to both adopt these pass programs and promote them to their own employees so they know their options for alternative and mass transit. We need to encourage and educate about driving reduction programs and promote our public and environmental health.
