Name: Alberto "Al" Tovar

Occupation: Business Owner

PERSONAL: My wife, Bertha Juarez Tovar and I have been married for 25 years and have three children: Tony, age 19; Becky age 16; and Carlos, age 11. I was born in San Mateo and raised in San Bruno; Bertha was born in San Francisco and also raised in San Bruno. Berta was a Trustee and past president of the San Bruno Park Elementary School District. I have lived in San Bruno for forty-seven years and my wife and I are raising our children in the house I was raised in. We have been living in our current home for the past 25 years. My parents were born in Mexico and I come from a family of nine Mexican-American siblings.

OCCUPATION: A former Community Liaison to the San Mateo Union High School District. Moreover, I give public presentations on Gang Prevention & Intervention and gang violence. I am also a business owner and president of Sunset Company. I started my first company twenty years ago and have been an entrepreneur since.

PAST WORK EXPERIENCE: I worked for the City of San Bruno Police Department as a Community Service Officer for ten years.

EDUCATION: Graduated from Capuchino High School in 1972, and attended the Skyline College for two years.

SPECIAL TRAINING: Received a certificate for successfully completing "Youth Gang Seminar" sponsored by the Oakland Police Department in Oakland, 1992. Also have successfully completed Executive Protection Services Training; certified in CPR. Bi-lingual and Bi-culural.

ASSOCIATIONS & PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS: Founder and board member, Latino Parents Association of San Mateo Union High School District. Founder, Baile Folklorico; President, Centro Cultural Latino; Board of Directors, Service League of San Mateo County; member, San Bruno Lions Club Association; member. Other accomplishments and community involvement include:

  • Organizer, after school tutorial program for the San Mateo Union High School District;

  • Operation Santa Claus, founder. A program of the San Bruno Police Department for low-income families;

  • Creation of "at-risk youth support" program for the San Mateo Union High School District;

  • Founder and organizer of the Chicano/Latino Peace Conference;

  • Youth-to-Youth Mentor Program for the San Mateo Union High School District;

  • ALAS, Association of Latin American Students in the San Mateo Union High School District;

  • St. Timothy's outreach counseling support group;

  • Day-laborer program task force member for the City of San Mateo;

  • Outreach coordinator between the private sector, the community, and gang members;

  • Development Director for the Latino Parents Association of the San Mateo Union High School District Student Scholarship Program.

HOBBIES & INTERESTS: Listening to, and playing music, golf, football, basketball, visiting museums, and reading, especially about the Aztec civilization and the Mesoamerican influence. I take pride in working in our communities to promote and advance cultural awareness programs, provide public forums on gang violence, instilling education to our youth, and working with community organizations and the private sector that assist in providing resources to our communities.
