Residents and parents need to know how well their school district is functioning, and this requires accessible and accurate data.Residents need to know how efficiently their school district is functioning, how effectively resources are being spent, and how well their students are performing. Public discussions about schools need to be informed by clear and unambiguous information and data collected by the district and by others interested in the schools. My work as Director of the Oakland Education Cabinet led to the publication of the 2001 Annual Report to the Community on the Oakland Public Schools, acknowledged as one of the best int he country by the Education Trust and the Cross City Campaign. I teach a course at Holy Names College, Educational Evaluation, so I have expertise in this area. As a board member, I will welcome the participation of the public in the evaluation of school effectiveness, student academic achievement, and district performance. |
