Helynna Brooke has lived in the Sunset District of San Francisco for the past 14 years. She has four children - the oldest is 25 and a Captain in the US Army Rangers and a graduate of West Point. A daughter is in her second year at Boston College, a stepson lives in Daly City, and a stepdaughter is in the tenth grade. For the past three years, Ms. Brooke has been the Executive Director of the San Francisco Mental Health Board, advocating for the mentally ill. She is most known for her work with the San Francisco Police Department, collaborating to develop the Police Crisis Intervention Training for more effective interactions with the mentally ill. Prior to this position, Ms. Brooke coordinated the development of the Cecil Williams Glide Community House, which is supportive housing for people who were formerly homeless, addicted to drugs, or with HIV AIDS. It is an extremely successful model which has gained national attention. |
