Political Philosophy for Larisa Casillas
Candidate for |

|
I had been registered Green for many years, but never bothered to become active until after the November 2000 elections when I saw the Green Party attract a number of young voters who felt that they were not being represented by the Republicans or Democrats and saw the Greens as an alternative. I was concerned at the lack of people of color, and continue to be concerned, but believe that the Greens can become more inclusive and diverse. I believe it can be done by adopting issues that resonate with diverse communities. If elected, I will work to foster stronger alliances between the Green Party and communities of color, working class and lower-income communities in San Francisco. I will lead the Greens towards this end by playing a leadership role in the decision-making process whereby we adopt our issues. We will adopt issues that speak to the concerns of people of color. For example, we will work on environmental justice issues that the residents in the Bay View/Hunters Point area are struggling against. We will advocate for an increased supply of affordable housing for low-income tenants citywide, but especially in neighborhoods such as the Mission where many immigrant and low-income families have been displaced. In addition, I will work with my Green comrades to make our meetings and decision-making process friendlier and easier to understand. I will work to create greater access for other women of color and immigrants, like myself. |
