My thoughts on being part of the Green County Council

By Paul C Platt

Candidate for Green Party County Council, At Large; County of San Francisco

I feel that the Green Party has the potential to be the single-most effective force for progressive change in San Francisco and the world. With our grassroots structure, ties to many activist groups in the city, and our electoral nature we have a complete package which can enact real change in the system.
Growing up in Ithaca NY, another progressive mecca, and a place where Nader got over 20%, I have a desire to help San Francisco's Green roots flourish. I've lived in SF for 4 1/2 years and I'm very eager to see it become the precedent for a large city with a powerful progressive soul. As a 28 year old, I bring an important youth element which can build ties to the youth activist community.

I've been active with the Green Party since the Medea and Nader campaigns and have attended nearly every meeting since. My work with the party includes: designing flyers and posters, organizing successful fundraisers, initiating a mural project to beautify the Green Party office, and plenty of tabling, precinct walking and promotional activities.

I am firmly committed to seeing the party grow and flourish so that we can enact the changes we all feel strongly about. I feel that the Green Party has the potential to be the single-most effective force for progressive change in San Francisco and the world. With our grassroots structure, ties to many activist groups in the city, and our electoral nature we have a complete package which can enact real change in the system. People are starting to wake up and are ready to do something about the systematic inequities and corruption which have polluted our society for too long. I want the Green Party to funnel that energy into action and start the process of building a just society, originating locally in San Francisco. I completely agree with the Green Party platform and think it should be expanded and updated to more specifically address the needs of those who most desperately need change. I would especially like to see the SF Green Party work in the problem areas of electoral reform, corporate corruption, genetic engineering, social justice, police brutality, the prison industrial complex & death penalty, the drug war, corporate media, energy reform, civil liberties, public transportation & bike access and tenant rights & gentrification.
