Beliefs and Accomplishments

By Barbara A. Kerr

Candidate for Mayor; City of Alameda

This information is provided by the candidate
Years of Necessary Experience, Environmentalist, Neighborhood Preservationist, Supporter of the Arts.
I have nine years of actively working on Alameda's biggest challenge: base conversion covering land comprising 25% of our city. I was on the Base Reuse Advisory Group for three years before I was elected to the City Council in 1996. As a Council Woman, I am a member of the Alameda Reuse and Redevelopment Authority; a member of our Community Improvement Commission, which is our redevelopment agency; the Financial Improvement Commission; and the Alameda Housing Authority.

I have actively worked and voted for preserving Alameda's existing residential neighborhoods. Any new developments should be award-winning designs compatible with our existing neighborhoods and compatible with Alameda's unique island location.

Financing methods now used for assisting home ownership were introduced by me before I was even elected.

I initiated ART-IN-THE-PARK, the successful art show for Alameda artists in Jackson Park. I was the major supporter of the formation of the City of Alameda Arts Council.

I will continue my voting record to 1.) keep taxes down, 2.) support Measure A, 3.) stop intrusive infill development, 4.) increase our open space, 5.) require developers to enhance our shoreline with parks and trails, 6.) find sane answers to traffic and other safety hazards, and 7.) insure adequate notification for neighbors of proposed developments, 7.) continue to increase our General Fund Reserves.
