Smart Voter Full Biography for Alice E. Evenson

Candidate for
City Clerk; City of Pittsburg

This information is provided by the candidate

Born in Berkeley and raised in Oakland, California, Alice is a 4th generation Northern Californian. Alice moved to Pittsburg in 1980 and raised her children here as a single parent. Her son is a recent graduate of UCLA and resides in Los Angeles; her daughter currently lives in Washington State.

Alice began her career in public service working for the Alameda County Probation Department. From there, she entered into a career in the construction industry, which included a stint working in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska on the TransAlaska Pipeline. During her ten years at a local manufacturing plant, she earned an employee of the month award and three President's Awards; two for excellence in customer service and one for her involvement in instituting an on-line pricing computer system for the entire Western division. In 1997 she began working in Municipal government at the City of Pittsburg. She is currently the Executive Assistant at the City. Alice has been a Notary Public for two and a half years. She also serves as the Deputy City Clerk, which includes all duties of the City Clerk in their absence, and is confident she has the hands-on knowledge it takes to be an effective City Clerk.

As Deputy City Clerk, Alice is pursuing status as a Certified Municipal Clerk, a process that is lengthy and time-consuming but which she feels is important to the office. Courses are offered through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks to Deputy City Clerks and City Clerks.

Alice is a history buff and is particularly fond of her passion for geneology. As a result of her painstaking research, she has been able to become a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She feels this is a wonderful legacy she can pass on to her children and grandchildren. She is also a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society.

In the 1980's Alice was an active member of the Concord Chapter of Parents Without Partners and served on the Board of Directors as Secretary, Vice-President and President for many years. Alice was also a founding member of the Delta Dog Training Club in Pittsburg, and a member of the Board of Directors.

Alice has always had a passion for music of all types, having played piano when she was a child. When she became aware of her children's musical talents, she became an avid member of the Band Boosters at both the Junior High and High School levels. She was an active member of the Board of Directors of both clubs.

Alice is a recent breast cancer survivor. She states: "Being faced with your own mortality puts everything in perspective for you. You come to realize that you must live in the moment, and reach for your goals, however lofty they may seem. Becoming a City Clerk is something I have always felt I wanted to pursue. My experience last year has taught me there is no time like the present." It was during this time that she dealt with her illness that we found out how dedicated and loyal Alice is to the City of Pittsburg. She courageously and graciously continued to work hard for you, the citizens, while only missing 5 weeks of time throughout her chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation treatments. She is not only a survivor, she has shown unprecedented commitment to the people of Pittsburg. In fact, she was honored with a Proclamation from the Mayor in June of this year for the outstanding job she has done.
