Candidate Statement

By Alan Toy

Candidate for Member, Rent Control Board; City of Santa Monica

This information is provided by the candidate
This is a difficult time for rent control in Santa Monica. With skyrocketing rents and property speculation, stabilization in housing costs is needed more than ever. But statewide laws have significantly weakened tenants' rights over the past decade, upsetting the slow but steady growth in rental housing prices. The stampede to maximize profits has led to fear, suspicion and hardship for many longtime residents of Santa Monica, particularly for seniors and other vulnerable tenants. This is no longer a community where middle and lower income renters can expect to find homes.

I have been honored to serve Santa Monica on the Rent Control Board, but it hasn't been enjoyable watching the loss of affordable apartments. If re-elected, I promise to keep the brakes on inflationary rental housing costs, while applying the Rent Control Charter regulations fairly and firmly. I'll continue to work with our representatives in Sacramento to ensure a future for Santa Monica that includes people of all ethnicities, backgrounds and circumstances.

Santa Monica has been my family's home for 23 years. Giving back to this wonderful city over those two decades has been an exciting and rewarding part of my life here. Thank you for voting. That is one of our most important contributions toward preserving our democratic society. When you do vote, I hope you'll consider keeping me on the Rent Control Board for four more years.
