Mark graduated from the Naval Academy in 1963 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. After post-graduate studies in the Navy Nuclear Power Training Program, he served aboard Polaris and Poseidon submarines. This set a trend for the rest of Mark's 25-year Naval service which involved classified ocean survey work, "playing cat and mouse" with Soviet submarines, and development and evaluation of navigational systems for submarines and submarine-launched missiles. As a Lieutenant, Mark was the youngest Polaris submarine navigator at the time. He rose to the rank of Commander and the responsibility of governing billions of dollars of submarine navigation system hardware. Awards include the Navy Unit Commendation and the Navy Achievement Medal. Transferred to California in 1977, Mark decided to settle permanently in Orange County upon his military retirement in 1984. Corporate Career From 1984 to 1993 Mark used his technical and management skills as a systems engineer, program manager and consultant to a variety of high-tech projects related to personal computers, satellite navigation systems, ocean survey systems and satellite communications. Entrepreneurial Career Mark's long-time hobby interest in radio-controlled (RC) model airplanes evolved into an international business, Electronic Model Systems. Founded in 1969 as a mail-order business with products for the RC hobbyist, the business expanded to serve professional remote-piloted vehicles. EMS sells to special effects studios, including the Jim Hensen (Muppet) studio. Today, Electronic Model Systems' products are sold around the world to hobbyists, dealers and distributors. Community Service Mark has been an active member and leader of Yorba Linda and Orange County community organizations for the past 14 years: Member of the Yorba Linda Chamber of Commerce President of the Rancho Dominguez Townhomes Association Former Member of the United Way Finance Committee Past Chair of the North Orange County Council United Way Past President of the North Orange County Division, American Heart Association Past President of Aware Concerned Citizens Organized for Responsible Development (ACCORD). Political Service Since moving to Yorba Linda in 1986, Mark has taken an active role in his community and has served in a number of elected and appointed positions: Councilman, Yorba Linda City Council Mayor, Yorba Linda (1991 and 1997) Director, Orange County Sanitation Districts Director, Santa Ana River Flood Protection Agency Director, Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency Mark called for and chaired the first ever joint City Council/School Board meeting. He strongly advocated opening the police substation within Yorba Linda. Mark worked to bring our community four new parks, the Tommy Lasorda, Jr. Fieldhouse, our wonderful Community Center, and the Black Gold Golf Course, now under construction. Family Mark is married to Eileen, a powerhouse in her own right. Certified as a Senior Right of Way Agent, Eileen has represented several major oil companies and now works for the City of Los Angeles Department of Airports at Ontario as a Real Estate Officer. Mark's daughter, Suzanne, holds a Master of Music in Voice from Manhattan School of Music. Currently, she is working as the Artists & Repertoire Assistant for the RCA Victor Group's Red Seal record label in New York, where she is also involved in several aspects of the development and production of new classical compilations. A seasoned performer, she continues to be active on the classical and operatic stage as a mezzo-soprano soloist and conductor." Eileen's son Chris is the Design Engineer for Lyall Turbosonics of Rancho Santa Margarita. Chris married Laranne Faye this past June. Eileen's daughter Katie is a graduate of Cal State Fullerton with a BA in Mathematics. Katie is married to Patrick Roche, an engineer for CISCO Systems and they now have a new son, Andrew James. The young couple resides in Fullerton. Hobbies In addition to his interest in radio-controlled model airplanes that evolved into a thriving business, Mark enjoys large-scale home improvement projects. Mark loves antique cars, and is nearing complete restoration of his stone brown and black 1931 Model A Ford roadster. |
