CUHSD Needs A More Active Governing Board

By Bob Becklund

Candidate for Board Member; Campbell Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
One CUHSD school has a very low score and three others appear to be running below their capability. The CUHSD Board needs to find problems and get corrective action.
The Academic Performance Index (API) results for tests taken in spring 2001 at CUHSD schools varied from 606 (Del Mar) to 756 (Leigh). Blackford did not report an API.

Del Mar has a much lower poverty rate than the State and that should lead us to expect that Del Mar would get a higher API than the State. . Del Mar also has a higher percent of parents who are college grads than the State has. That should also lead us to expect Del Mar would have a higher API than the State. Still the API for the whole State was 638, 5% more than Del Mar's API.

There may be many valid reasons for the 606 score but the Board has not been active in determining any reasons.

We need a more active Governing Board. The Board, is responsible to govern properly and in this case that includes finding the cause of the problem, getting proper corrective action of some kind (or recognition of superior performance if that is the case) and promoting a school environment that encourages academic excellence. (preferably by use of positive motivation).

These activities will take more work from each Board member, perhaps 20 more hours per month. There is no additional cost for the public.

If you agree that the Board needs to be more active, Vote for Lou Marotti and Bob Becklund.
