Senior ServicesBy Armando GomezCandidate for Council Member; City of Milpitas | |

Our senior population is the largest growing population and more should be done to address the needs of this growing population. Our current senior center is inadequate and eliminating the mold problem is not enough. We need to provide an improved senior center with expanded services such as adult day care, ESL instruction, translation services, computer access and training. Our current senior center is a historic building and expansions of historic buildings often result in spending tons of money for a facility that may not meet the needs of our senior population. The best solution is to build the new senior center on the vacant city owned 2 acre parcel across the street of the current senior center and identify another use for the existing center. The vacant site has the potential for being used as a senior center with senior housing on part of the site. But an improved senior center is just one of the important needs of our senior community. We can and should do more. Seniors need affordable rental housing. With our current housing crisis, the elderly are hit hard by expensive rents. We need to create housing options that will allow seniors to live near family and friends. We need to ensure that as the Midtown area becomes developed, affordable senior housing is included as part of new developments. We need to aggressively improve the quality of life for our seniors and make Milpitas the city of choice for seniors. Our success in making Milpitas the city of choice for seniors will be measured by how well we improve senior services and increase affordable rental housing. |
