ENROLLMENT GROWTH MANAGEMENTBy Michele T. NelsonCandidate for Board Member; Palomar Community College District; Full Term | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Dr. Nelson provides background on enrollment growth and recommendations for maintaining access for students.Enrollment is at all time high and the population of North San Diego County continues to grow. How will Palomar College meet the increased demand for access to education and training? How will Palomar meet the costs for increased enrollment? California community colleges have been informed that they will receive only 67% of the total costs of educating the group of students who have increased enrollment over last year--a shortfall of about 3 million dollars. ·The Palomar College staff has begun to creatively examine its existing resources to effectively manage enrollment and provide new and returning students with excellent instruction and all the needed support services to help them learn. ·Working together, faculty and staff have improved the class schedules so that classes are offered and available when and where students need them. As a consequence of these efforts most students should be able to complete their goals in a timely manner. ·Centers have costly overhead and often are not able to provide needed student support services. Currently the college has undertaken an in-depth study which will result in Facilities Master Plan and will address solutions for best serving students throughout the district over the next fifteen to twenty years. ·The Strategic Planning Process and the accompanying allocation model will also address some enrollment related issues by applying resources where they are needed to solve problems of high student demand. Fiscal stability and accountability are inextricably linked with enrollment growth management. |
