Gavin Newsom was born October 10, 1967 to the Honorable William Newsom and Tessa Newsom. Gavin grew up in the Bay area and graduated from Santa Clara University in 1989 with a bachelor of science in political science.

Upon graduation, Gavin spent the next several years starting and building successful businesses in San Francisco. In 1992, Gavin opened his first business, the PlumpJack Wine Shop, where he combined his love for wine and his entrepreneurial spirit. In the years that followed, Gavin's success in the private sector continued, and today he is a general partner in the PlumpJack Wine Shop, the PlumpJack Cafe, the Balboa Cafe, the Matrix/Fillmore, the PlumpJack Management Group, and the PlumpJack Development Fund.

In 1996, Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. asked Gavin to be President of San Francisco's Parking and Traffic Commission. Gavin immediately applied the entrepreneurial and creative spirit he gained in the private sector. With his success at the Parking and Traffic Commission, Mayor Brown tapped Gavin again, but this time to join the Board of Supervisors. In 1998, the voters elected Gavin to the Board of Supervisors. Today, he currently serves as Vice-Chair of the San Francisco Transportation Authority, Chair of the Neighborhood Services and Recreation Committee, and gubernatorial apppointee to the San Francisco Bay Area Water Transit Authority.

As a member of the Board of Supervisors, Gavin has fought to improve treatment for substance abusers, increase youth mentoring programs, support and maintain non-profit and cultural organizations and small businesses, improve SRO habitability, expand upon alternative transportation systems, and create the Municipal Transportation Authority and Taxi Commission.

Gavin continues his focus on increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of city government in San Francisco. With his Performance and Review Pilot Project, Gavin has changed the way San Francisco does business by making it more accountable and responsive. Currently, Gavin is working on improving homeless services in San Francisco.

Gavin has recently married Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, a San Francisco Assistant District Attorney.
