LYNNE NEWHOUSE SEGAL has been a resident of Pacific Heights for 17 years, where together with her husband, Ed, she raised two sons in the district she is now seeking to represent on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Lynne began her lifelong commitment to public service as an outspoken advocate for abortion rights-before the Supreme Court's Roe vs. Wade decision. An activist in Democratic politics since volunteering on Robert F. Kennedy's U.S. Senate campaign in 1964, she founded the first NOW chapter in Rockland County, New York-where she was the youngest woman ever appointed to the Human Rights Commission by the county legislature.

In 1976, the Segal family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, and Lynne continued her activism in her work for the Carter-Mondale Campaign in San Mateo County. She served on the board of the National Women's Political Caucus and on the executive board of State Democratic Central Committee. She attended Hastings College of the Law, graduated in 1980 and passed the Bar on her first try-all while raising two young sons. She put her expertise in municipal, criminal and family law to work as Staff Attorney to U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos (D-San Mateo), and helped to open his first congressional district office.

By the time Lynne and her family relocated to San Francisco, she was already regarded as a tireless and effective organizer. In fact, her work as producer of the kickoff event for the 1984 Democratic National Convention won national attention for being the first joint appearance of the historic Mondale-Ferrarro national ticket. And it began an impressive legacy of public service in the City that has continued unabated ever since.

In 1987-before President Reagan ever mentioned the word "AIDS"-Lynne produced Aid & Comfort, a groundbreaking benefit for AIDS service organizations, winning praise from the Examiner's Rob Morse as "the unsung heroine who stitched the event together."

Long before the issue of homelessness became fodder for mayoral politics, Lynne helped convene policy experts and community activists for San Francisco's first Summit on Homelessness in 1990.

In 1997, Lynne served as fundraiser for the 65th Annual Conference of Mayors, coordinating an event that played host to more than 350 mayors, five cabinet members, Vice President Gore and President Clinton. Praised by the organization's executive director as the best conference in the organization's history, it brought national attention to San Francisco-and did it all without taxpayer funding.

Serving most recently on the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Commission, Lynne Newhouse Segal's four-year tenure as a full-time, hands-on commissioner earned her widespread praise for leadership and hard work. As the San Francisco Bay Guardian said in its recent endorsement, "Segal shined as a thoughtful, intelligent commissioner who actually listened to the concerns of less-well-shod park users, particularly groups that represent children's interests."

In a news report more than a decade ago, Lynne described herself as "a public servant in the private sector." With a lifetime of activism and community service making a real difference in people's lives, she's uniquely qualified to provide the voice our community deserves in City Hall. That's why Lynne Newhouse Segal will be an independent and effective advocate on the Board of Supervisors-full time, full term and fully committed to the neighborhoods of District Two.
