In the context of our school board, I interpret this statement to mean that the board should:
- explain to the public over and over again, in different groups and at varying times and places, the issues under consideration, which solutions are being considered, and the foreseeable impacts of each approach
- ask over and over again for guidance from the public about what is important, and about the things that they know--like how well the teachers are teaching, how well students are learning, and what it feels like to be a student or a parent at one of our schools
- listen intently to the education professionals and other staff members, hearing what is needed, giving great weight to their requests and advice
- keep our collective eyes on the ball, focusing every effort and every dream on the schools, the students, and the staff
- act as exemplary stewards of the public's property and funds
- demonstrate to the public, and especially our district's children, a commitment as public officials to justice in all its forms
I worship democracy. Oh, I know school board meetings are dull to some people. But to me, they are like a night in church. And the experience of a community, meeting civilly together to decide how to educate its children, is to me one of our country's small miracles.
