1. While serving on the bench, do you believe you have a role in bringing important legal or judicial issues before the public or the legislature? What should your role be?
|
Answer from Janet R. Burnside:
Yes. I announce and explain my decisions from the bench and in detailed memorandum opinions stating simply and clearly my legal analysis, findings, reasoning, and conclusions. I write for legal publications and make myself available for presentations at community groups on legal problems and topics of the day. I encourage the use of question and answer sessions at public meetings since they better engage the audience and address its specific concerns. Judges should continue to work with the legislature to improve our laws and legal system. Legislators need and appreciate our experience working in the court system.
Answer from Evelyn L. Stratton:
In my first term, I have devoted countless personal hours to various court reforms including court security, adoption, and mental health. From 1993-1999, I served as co-chair of the Supreme Court/Judicial Conference Committee on Court Security where we developed standards for lower courts in courtroom security. I serve on the Dave Thomas Adoption Foundation Board and work on national adoption law reform through my leadership in the National Judicial College and National Center for State Courts. In addition, in 2000, I founded and now chair the Supreme Court of Ohio Advisory Committee on Mentally Ill in the Courts.
