Councilmember Wendy Greuel was sworn into office on April 4, 2002 to represent Los Angeles' Second Council District in the San Fernando Valley.

In her first year of service, Councilmember Greuel has been worked tirelessly to fight for the Valley's fair share of City resources. Within her first six weeks of taking office, Councilmember Greuel introduced a borough proposal, which sought to dramatically reorganize city government, moving power away from City Hall and back to the neighborhoods. Her leadership is inspired by her strong belief that more responsive government, greater citizen participation, and empowered neighborhoods will improve the quality of life for residents of City of Los Angeles.

As Chair of the Housing and Community Development Committee, Councilmember Greuel believes affordable housing for working families and community programs for the young and mature strengthen the quality of the City's neighborhoods. Councilmember Greuel has fought to improve home ownership opportunities by expanding LA's BEST after-school program and ensuring the Valley receives its fair share of federal Community Development and Urban Development dollars.

As a member of the Planning and Land Use Committee, Councilmember Greuel led the fight for the passage of the Mountains Scenic Preservation Plan, which identifies prominent ridgelines and protects them from development for all time. Councilmember Greuel has worked to preserve open space and create more parks by initiating the purchase of Studio City Golf and Tennis recreational facility, developing Oro Vista Park and fighting to protect Hansen Dam recreational area from unnecessary dumping.

Dedicated to improving the quality of life for all residents, Councilmember Greuel has committed to making our neighborhoods safe, investing in our local economy and building a brighter future for our children. She has fought to protect and expand the senior lead officer program and improve police recruitment and retention rates. She has worked to find sites for new schools and expedite construction to relieve overcrowding. Councilmember Greuel has led the fight to reexamine the City's entire business tax structure taking a comprehensive approach to support the businesses and individuals contributing to the health of the economy.

Councilmember Greuel always has had a passion for community and public service. She has a developed record of accomplishment through her days as a key member of LA Mayor Tom Bradley's team at City Hall, her time as a high-ranking federal official working with Cabinet Secretary Henry Cisneros at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and her work at DreamWorks as a corporate affairs executive.

Councilmember Greuel has been an active leader in her community. She served as Vice President of the UCLA Alumni Association, and as a Board member of LA's BEST, TreePeople, Shelter Partnership, Project Restore, Alternative Living for the Aging, Enterprise Foundation, Glendale Chamber of Commerce, the Coro Foundation and was appointed to the California Film Commission.

Councilmember Greuel is a Van Nuys homeowner and life-long resident of the San Fernando Valley. She grew up in the North Valley, attended Los Angeles public schools, and graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her family has owned and operated a building supply and trucking business in the Second District for nearly 60 years. She lives in Van Nuys with her husband Dean Schramm.

The Second Council District serves the communities of Lake View Terrace, La Tuna Canyon, North Hollywood, Shadow Hills, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Sunland, Sun Valley, Tujunga, Valley Village, Valley Glen and Van Nuys.
