Keeping Current Rental Properties Up To Code is VitalBy James T. O'ReillyCandidate for Member Council; City of Wyoming | |

Quality, clean and well-maintained rental spaces attract tenants who care for their community. Compliance with the building and safety codes improves our housing stock and aids preservation of vibrant, proud neighborhoods in our city.Wyoming's residential quality and the resulting pride of neighbors shows up almost everywhere in our city. Comparing housing quality, cleanliness and safety with some of the adjacent communities shows Wyoming is a city in which we can invest and protect the quality of our own investments in homes here. But we cannot take it for granted that absent owners will care as much as residential owners. We cannot assume quality of housing is a certainty, because landlords like all investors are concerned with payouts from their properties. I am eager to put my planning, safety and law enforcement background to use in support of a city that monitors for any deficiencies in its housing supply and acts in a deliberate and prompt manner to hold rental property owners to full compliance with ordinances and zoning rules. This is not against the landlord's long term interest but it is essential to enforce the law so that properties are safe and sound. Our children and community at large benefit from higher quality maintenance of rental properties. Nearby communities have a ways to go in the improvement of their rentals and I urge Wyoming to use efficient compliance tools to avoid deteriorating conditions in our city's rental housing. |
