Because I Want to ServeBy Carroll E. RobertsCandidate for Board Member; Southwest Local School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Who I am, why I want to serve, and what I will do if elected to the School Board .I am Carroll Roberts, and I'm running for School Board in the Southwest Local School District. My wife, Mary Jane, and I have lived in the district for 36 years, and both of our children were educated from kindergarten through twelfth grade in Southwest.
I'd like to cover three topics in this brief essay. First, Iwant to tell you a bit about my background. Second, I'll tell you why I'm running for School Board. Third, I'd like to tell you what I will do if I'm one of the three persons elected on November 4. First, my background. I taught English and speech at William Henry Harrison High School for six years, from 1966 to 1972. At various times during that period, I was Student Council advisor, the It's Academic sponsor, Key Club co-sponsor, NHS advisor, department head, and reserve baseball coach. I was principal of WHHHS for 21 years, longer than any other principal in the school's proud history. I was the principal when the school was named a national Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. As you probably know, six Southwest Schools have been named Blue Ribbon Schools: the high school, the junior high, Harrison Elementary, Whitewater Valley, Crosby, and Miamitown Elementaries.
As far as my educational training is concerned, I have aBA from Georgetown College, a master's in English from Ohio University, and a master's and a doctorate in school administration from the University of Cincinnati. I am at the present time in my third year as superintendent of the St. Bernard-Elmwood Place City Schools.
To qualify me for the Board of Education, I havesuccessful experience in leadership, school law, finance, administration, elementary, middle school, and high school curriculum, school construction, policymaking, and planning. Now I would like to tell you why I'm running for the Board. The reason is very simple: I want to serve. I want to give something back to the school district that gave so much to my family and to me. I have no axes to grind, and I have no personal agenda. I just want to use my education and my experience, and my knowledge of the history of the school district, to make sound policy decisions that will benefit kids.
Southwest is a rapidly growing school district, withhighly qualified, caring teachers and support staff, solid leadership, and strong parent and community support. Geographically, Southwest is bigger than the City of Cincinnati, covering more than 100 square miles, including Harrison, Crosby, and Whitewater Townships, Harrison, Miamitown, Elizabethtown, New Haven, New Baltimore, and Hooven, as well as a part of Morgan Township in Butler County.
As a voter, you need to know my priorities as a schoolboard member. Here they are: 1. The safety and security of all students and staff members. 2. Meeting the needs of all kids, including the special needs students who deal with learning challenges every day, the gifted and talented students, and by far the largest group of all, the average or near-average students. 3. Conservative spending. 4. Planning to meet the future needs of the district. My pledge to you is this: On every issue that comes before the School Board, my bottom line, or litmus test, for decision making will be this question: What is best for the kids of Southwest? My name is Carroll Roberts, and I urge everyone to get out and vote on November 4. If you believe I could do a good job, then I would appreciate your vote for the Southwest Board of Education. Thank you. |
