I locate my politics philosophically at the intersection of many diverse currents of thought: a humanist Marxism, feminism (especially Third World feminisms), radical democracy, deep ecology, anarchism, anti-racism, and trade unionism. The sum of these, and much else, is "the meaning of green" for me. I have taught courses on issues of Third World development and social change in the department of sociology at UCSB since 1988; before that, while a student at Berkeley, I was involved in Central American solidarity work, the anti-apartheid movement, the drive for a graduate student union, the peace and anti-nuclear movements (remember the Cruise missiles of the Reagan era?), the Rainbow Coalition. In Santa Barbara, I have had a harder time finding good political work, first doing a rewarding stint with the local Amnesty International chapter, and now making contact with the local Green Party as well as the far-sighted new organization SB CAN. The Greens are where my heart lies and I am putting a lot of energy into helping this fledgling party make a difference. |
