1. What does California need to do to address the current budget crisis?
|
Answer from David A. Cooper:
Comprehensive tax reform to include a revision of the inequitable
property tax system that allows major corporations to pay far less
than their share.
Answer from Karen Bass:
Create alternative revenue sources, by taking steps such as closing corporate tax loopholes and reinstating the upper income tax bracket, to maintain vital services such as police and firefighters, education and infrastructure.
2. What should the state's priorities be for K-12 education? For the Community College System?
|
Answer from Karen Bass:
Reducing the achievement gap between students from different districts to make sure that ALL students who graduate from our public high schools are qualified for college. We also must work to make education at the Community Colleges and State Colleges available for all Californians who wish to further their education.
Answer from David A. Cooper:
Full funding under Prop. 98 provisions for K-12 and the
Community College system, plus funding for increasing teacher's
salaries substantially.
3. What measures would you support to address California's water needs?
|
Answer from Karen Bass:
Clean, healthy water is a neccessity, that is why I support the Clean Water Act and will provide the resources needed to provide whatever infrastructure is required to get that water to Californians
Answer from David A. Cooper:
Long-range planning. I believe in "20/20 Vision" , planning for the
future to ensure our needs are met. The plans of the 1960s helped
fuel California's phenomenal growth. We need to have this kind of
vision for not only continual growth, but the kind of growth that will
be protective of the environment and that will provide jobs for our
citizens.
4. What should the Legislature be doing to address the needs of Californians without health insurance?
|
Answer from Karen Bass:
As a former healthcare professional, I support Universal Healthcare. Until that is a reality, I will support legislation such as SB2, or any other legislation that improves access to healthcare for Californians.
Answer from David A. Cooper:
As the country's largest state, I believe we should embark on a
single-payer system of health care. I also believe we can provide
a basic coverage health plan for all Californians at relatively
modest cost to individuals of lower income.
