Playa Vista Development Is Not Good For Culver City

By Tom Camarella

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Culver City

This information is provided by the candidate
It really comes down to the fact that Culver City gets all the negatives and Playa gets the positives. Therefore, since he believes this development is unhealthy and a large expense in the short and long run for Culver City, Tom will do whatever he can to legally diminish or delay this development.
Tom will stand up to all developers, in and out of Culver City, and demand that they respect our residents, culture, and environment, so they will not diminish our quality of life. He is very concerned about proposed developments in neighborhoods surrounding Culver City such as Playa Vista, Phase II. When discussed by the City Council in December, 2003, they voted (4-1) not to oppose this development nor to request full financial assistance from the developers to offset the impact Playa Vista will have on Culver City.

The Council incumbents voted to only include traffic as a problem, even though the surrounding cities included wear and tear on the streets, need for added police and traffic control, increased air and noise pollution and increased lighting as part of their concerns -- and that's over and above the destruction of the remaining wetlands.

It really comes down to the fact that Culver City gets all the negatives and Playa gets the positives. Therefore, since he believes this development is unhealthy and a large expense in the short and long run for Culver City, Tom will do whatever he can to legally diminish or delay this development.

With Tom's background of negotiating over 4 billion dollars worth of contracts and his law degree, he will review all relevant laws to make sure the developers are obeying the letter of the law. If Playa cannot be stopped, he will press them, as is Santa Monica and Marina del Rey and ask for more concessions such as:

1. More funding for our Police, Fire, Public Works, Parks and Recreation Departments in addition to Traffic Mitigation;
2. More refuge or park land for Culver City and surrounding residents, and
3. Demand a more realistic Environmental Impact Report.

He will work to form coalitions with the Culver City residents, environmental organizations and regional governmental entities to solicit ideas and support for the above. Again, Tom will stand up for the people of Culver City and make sure that we maintain our quality of life.
