Contra Costa County, CA | November 2, 2004 Election |
Candidate StatementBy Patricia "Pat" RudebuschCandidate for Board Member; Orinda Union School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Orinda's schools rank among the very top in the state. This is not by accident, but by a concerted effort on the parts of the schools, parents, and the community-at-large to ensure that our students get a solid education; one that will enable them to succeed as learners, individuals, and citizens. It has been an honor to help lead this effort. As school districts across the state are forced to reduce the scope of their educational programs, Orinda has maintained its commitment to educational excellence. Our focus is concise: provide strong academic programs, hire highly qualified teachers, and maintain facilities conducive to learning. In the past four years, we have done all of this. Our students' math scores are the third highest in the state due to our strategic efforts to improve math instruction. We have stemmed the flow of teachers leaving the district for higher paying jobs elsewhere and continue to improve relations with staff. We are nearing completion of facilities upgrades at each of our schools so they will conform with newer energy and safety standards. And, we have strengthened the core curriculum, maintained small class size, supported school libraries, and enriched learning opportunities for all students. Improvement is an ongoing commitment and challenges remain. As the state grapples with unparalleled fiscal problems and the demands of providing a solid education increase, I believe my experience and commitment will serve our schools well. I will continue to work toward ensuring adequate state and federal funding and the fiscal stability of our schools. And, I will work to support our teachers, students, and families in meeting the ever-increasing academic challenges. I feel privileged to serve our schools and I would be grateful for the opportunity to continue working to maintain Orinda's investment in excellent schools. |
