Issues and Needs for CCCD, Area 3By Bonnie CastreyCandidate for Trustee; Coast Community College District; Trustee Area 3 | |

We need a better way to maximize the budget, a more ethical board and stronger student support.Student fees have been raised from $11 to $26 per unit within two years. It is my opinion that they should not have been increased. No more money will come to our District as a result of the fee increase, rather the State will gain the revenue here. If we had to face deeper cuts in our budget in the future, I think we should cut all travel and conference expenses to bare minimums and in State only, and memberships and dues to organizations should be cut as well. We should also reduce the number of administrators and cap their salaries for the next 3 years. In other areas,we need more Trustee education and training on the subject of ethics, and we should hold training sessions between our management and labor organizations that seek interest based goals in negotiations. We need changes on this Board of Trustees to stop the Brown Act violations, quit the "sweetheart" deals with administrators, and to elect ethical individuals who will not seek personal gain over public interests. Finally, and more importantly, we must provide smaller class size, internships with teachers and mentoring programs to encourage more students to succeed in community college. |
