I'm proud of how the votes I've cast clearly illustrate my commitment to our community and the students we serve.
I've worked diligently on your behalf over the past four years, and would be honored to continue this work if re-elected. Throughout my first term in office, I've cast votes which clearly emphasize:
I have fought vigorously to retain the highly successful Class Size Reduction Program, in many instances being the only member of the Governing Board to do so. I have also voted against every attempt to increase the number of students in each classroom, and opposed State legislation which would have chipped away at this effective educational program.
Students and teachers deserve a safe educational environment. I led the effort to partner with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department to put full-time Deputies in our high schools. I have also voted to place Deputies and Police Officers in our middle schools. In matters of student discipline, my votes have always supported swift and severe disciplinary measures. Students who pose a safety risk to other students or staff members have no place in our schools.
I have supported rigorous academic standards in our schools and the dramatic expansion of vocational education. I have voted to preserve music and co-curricular programs that help students reach their full academic potential.
I'm vigilant in watching how the District spends its money. Like you, I'm a taxpayer - - and I need to know that these funds are spent wisely. I consistently vote to keep dollars where they belong...in our classrooms.
I consistently vote against all contracts for high-priced consultants. I scrutinize any such proposals, and look for less expensive ways to obtain expert services - - so that we can direct maximum funding to support students and teachers. At my urging, the District has adopted procedures to ensure that all consultant contracts must be free of any conflict of interest involving District staff.
While serving as Board President in 2003, I completely redesigned the Board's meeting agendas - - making it easier for community members to quickly see and understand the issues being voted upon. This type of openness is critical to keeping the District accountable to all those we serve.
- Positive Relations with Teachers and Staff
I have worked alongside teachers and other staff in discussing issues which include the District's annual budget. I have voted for labor agreements which appropriately respect the accomplishments of our staff and provide wages which will assist the District in retaining and attracting the caliber of employees our students need to ensure success in our classrooms.
In Summary: I believe that my votes in these matters reflect the values and priorities of our community, and I would be privileged to serve another term to continue my work on your behalf.
