The Town Manager has determined that there is no longer a need for an Elected Town Clerk. The Town Council has agreed with the Manager. The Town Manager has prepared a resolution to stipend the clerk with $150 a month. The Town Council has agreed with the Manager. The Town Manager has prepared an ordinance that deletes all mention of the Elected Town Clerk from the Town Code. The Town Council has agreed with the Manager. If the Manager wanted to change the make up of this Town's government the question above should have been placed on this November's ballot. Government Code allows for that question and for the Town to make its determination at the ballot box. The method of circumventing the legal and allowable question to be put to the voters was certainly devious and most unethical for the Council to agree to. Council did not even offer a public discussion or a public hearing on whether to change the form of the Town's government that has been in place and operating very successfully for over 117 years. This attempt to make the Town Clerk an appointed official is just another mechanization to decrease the rights and powers of the people of Los Gatos. Why would other elected officials, your Town Council, believe that an elected position, with entirely different duties than they perform, is useless? Why would your Town Council urge their citizens to discard this wonderful right by which they themselves acquired the offices they now hold? I am adamant in preserving my rights to choose, and care enough to go forward with an initiative by the people of Los Gatos to preserve those rights for you and for my grandchildren who live here and who should be able to look forward to inheriting our Town's full heritage.
