Character Education and Professional DevelopmentBy Steven Patrick "Steve" KahlCandidate for Board Member; Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
It is important to support district staff members as they continue to challenge students with meaningful rigor, but it is also necessary to encourage the regular infusion of character education into the curriculum. Because so many students in the district hope to qualify for admission to our most prestigious universities, they often need guidance in making ethical academic decisions--and in managing appropriately the stress resulting from high-stakes competition. As a board member, I would encourage professional development training that would supplement staff members' skills in character education. Consequently, students will be better prepared to act conscientiously--by considering the values of personal virtue, fairness, justice, community, and human rights inherent in any given choice. Students can be successful and ethical at the same time; it doesn't have to be an either/or dilemma. |
