Political Philosophy for Steven Patrick "Steve" Kahl

It is the purpose of public education to help students to become productive, contributing members of our democratic society--as spouses, parents, neighbors, workers, and citizens. To that end, schools must endeavor to do an even better job of teaching critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, and problem solving. Teachers have been charged with the awesome responsibility of guiding students as they identify their gifts, develop them, and share them with the community. Given that no two students are alike, effective teachers sometimes differentiate the curriculum to meet the varied academic readiness levels (and personal interests) of their students. District school boards work best when they consider the impact of every decision on quality teaching and learning. As a twenty year veteran teacher, I have witnessed how district leadership can profoundly affect students' educational experiences, for better or for worse, and I want to use my professional experience and my own education to help chart a more sensible course for the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District. |
