Sound and well-planned economic development is the cornerstone of everything else we need to accomplish in Oceanside.
Sound and well-planned economic development is the cornerstone of everything else we need to accomplish in Oceanside. Runaway residential development without corresponding business development has denied the City of Oceanside the tax revenues to meet the increased demand for virtually every kind of service and facility to support our growing population. Oceanside is second to last in sales tax revenue per capita (tax revenue per population) within San Diego County. That's the major reason we currently spend less per capita than almost every other city in the county on libraries, parks, our youth, seniors, police and fire. Over the past 30 years the Oceanside City Council has appeared to go out of its way to shut out businesses that would have pumped that much-needed tax revenue lifeblood into Oceanside. Plaza Camino Real (the Carlsbad Mall) and Car Country Carlsbad are just two examples of the extraordinary sales tax generators originally earmarked for development in Oceanside that our public officials managed to push away in favor of a few standalone businesses.
