Career spent in fire, rescue and emergency medical servicesI spent 30 years in the fire service in Southern California retiring at the rank of battalion chief with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Our department developed one of the earliest paramedic programs in the U.S. and is the primary emergency medical provider for all unicorporated areas of the county and more than 50 cities. In my early career I was a firefighter-paramedic in some busy areas and worked closely with various contract ambulance providers. As a battalion chief I planned and particated in many muti-casualty drills and managed many real life medical emergencies. My final assignment was as director of the L.A. County Fire Department's Emergency Medical Services Section. Our section included a staff of fire captains and registered nurses. We oversaw all issues related to our EMT and paramedic programs with over 2000 EMT's and more than 700 paramedics. As director, I interacted closely with the Department of Health Services, the county Emergency Medical Services Agency, private medical suppliers, the Southern California Hospital Assoc., and numerous private ambulance companies. I have a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from California State University Fullerton and have completed many classes in the Incident Command System and attended a program in Emergency Medical Management through FEMA's National Fire Academy in Maryland. |
