Providing Facilities Within High Environmental Standards

I know that with collective commitment of each Harbor Commissioner and each member of staff the Port San Luis Harbor District can provide services and facilities within high environmental standards, implementing best available control technology and best management practices.

The current commission and management staff place a high priority on accomplishing projects within the spirit as well as the letter of environmental laws and regulations.

Our commitment is reflected by our capital budget. We allocate our reserves and aggressively leverage those reserves to attract matching fund grants in order to provide environmentally sound facilities. A good example is our new boat yard. Regional Water Quality Control Board notified the District that our boatyard was substandard. The new epoxy coated concrete slab yard had a ticket of $600,000, half from reserves and half from matching fund grant.The pier crane for maintenance and restoration of the pier and the vessel and port equipment engines were seriously in need of replacement. They were upgraded for significant air quality improvement and amounted to $352,000. These projects were also funded by reserves and matching fund grants. The new parking lot,$590,000, and the boatyard include runoff containment and management to protect the marine environment from the industrial elements of the Port.

Through commitment to environmental excellence, a cooperative relationship with enforcement agencies and creative financing, the District consistantly improves environmental performance while improving the functional efficiency of the Port and providing for the future.
