MARTHA ANDREANI: BEACH-AREA HOMEOWNER, LIFE-LONG RESIDENT A life-long resident of Manhattan Beach, I attended Grandview, Robinson, Center Street, and Mira Costa High School. I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree from Pepperdine University. My career in human resources management has progressed from a wage and salary clerk at TRW to Vice President of Human Resources at a medical professional liability insurer. My career provides me the ability to form consensus opinions by listening to others and balancing diverse needs of involved parties a necessary and useful skill for City Council. Service to the community and its residents is in my blood. My father's family came to Manhattan Beach in 1920, and my father was one of three men who started the volunteer Fire Department. My brother was a volunteer Police Officer for 20 years (including 18 years as "Santa" on the city's Christmas float). My mother's family purchased a small beach cottage in 1915 and, because they liked it so much, they moved here full-time in 1920. My step-grandfather opened a real estate office, selling undeveloped lots. My grandmother opened the Gray Gull Café, one of Manhattan's first restaurants. I live, play and shop in our unique city, and conscientiously work to maintain and promote our quality of life, including participating in the development of the downtown strategic and general plans. Recently serving as president of the Manhattan Beach Residents Association, I had a major role in convincing the city to ban walkstreet commercialization, and now campaign against the city council Ballot Measure 2005-A that repeals their term limits. I will work to implement general plan goals: promoting the small-town atmosphere, preserving the unique characteristics of our residential neighborhoods, and fostering commercial areas to meet residents' needs. I will improve public involvement in Council decisions and work to advance our relationship with neighboring cities + both crucial to maintaining the quality of life we have come to know and love. |
