Azusa Valley Gun ClubBy Robert L "Bob" DonnelsonCandidate for Council Member; City of Azusa | |

What are the long term affects upon our city from this open air shooting range. We've all heard the same rhetoric from the out of town gun club members, and their "hired guns". They continually berate the residents of the Mountain Cove neighborhood, for moving next to the gun club, and then complaining about the noise. The one fact that this group continually ignores, is that this has been a source of complaints from Azusa residents, long before the Mountain Cove development was ever thought of. I have lived in Azusa for over 26 years, and there have been complaints as long as I can remember. This gun club tries wrap itself in the flag, the constitution, and our city heritage, to justify their existence. The club advocates stress how this facility is used by numerous area Police Departments and military units for training, but not once has a representative from these organizations come forward to support the facility. This gun club for the most part, is a receational activity, just like boating, skiing, off roading, and amateur drag racing. Recreation is a great thing, but when it infringes on the rights or our residents to live in peace in their own homes, I say it's time for the gun club to move to a more remote and appropriate area. In my opinion, from listening to the club supporters arguments for the club, I've come to the conclusion that the real reason that they come from all parts Los Angeles and Orange Counties, is because this is one of the last open shooting ranges in a convenient distance from their homes. Close enough to spend the day, afternoon, etc, and far enough away, not to be a nusiance to their family, friends, and neighbors. I support the city councils decision to re-zone this property to open space, that can be enjoyed by a far larger group of people, in search of safe and fun recreational activities. |
