My work with the Community began more than 27 years ago. It began as a result of seeing Police brutality and the injustice commited in our Public School system. I began educating myself to the way the system worked, although I am limited in English. I soon realized that the injustices were not only happening to residents that are poor and do not speak English but to all minorities, even those who are fluent in English. I got involved by creating a positive relationship with the Pasadena Police Department and began a Neighborhood Watch Program on our street. By getting other people involved we were able to take over the streets that were being controlled by gangs and drugs. I also volunteered at my daughter's schools and became part of the PTA. By getting involved I learned how the system worked and the rights of every parent and student. I then started using this bit of knowledge to help others. Soon, through word of mouth, people began seeing me as a resource into the community and the System. Eventually my involvement grew, joining the First Community Police Academy and forming the United Neighbors Association, which I am currently the President of. Many people question my inability to speak English fluently. To this I answer: The reason I decided to run for office is because I feel that in order to get the job done one must get involved. I have put four daughters through college without ever forgetting that the reason they succeeded was because I was aware of the expectations and requirements needed to succeed in the school system and as a good member of society. I know that my English is limited and I know that my English will get better. But I also know that I did not need English to get involved and help people get involved in the community. Many politicians do not know but English, and this does not make them inadequate to run or minimize their ability to get the job done in an area where other languages are spoken. Translators exist that accompany Presidents, Senators, and can accompany me, to be able to express the views of my constituents. Remember to elect the person that you feel knows the needs of the community, like I do, and will act accordingly to those needs, regardless of education or English knowledge. |
