California State Assembly, 70th District, 1994-2000 C. Brewer Company, Principal, 1963-Present Marilyn C. Brewer served in the California State Assembly from December 1994 to November, 2000. She represented the 70th Assembly District, which included Irvine, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. In the State Assembly, she served on Rules, Appropriations (vice chair), Human Services, Insurance (vice chair), Transportation, Governmental Organization, and Labor/Employment committees. During her tenure, Governors Pete Wilson and Gray Davis signed 34 of her bills into law. Following her retirement from the legislature due to term limits, she was appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly to the California Commission on Tax Policy in the New Economy. In January of 2005 she was unanimously selected to serve as the public member on the Orange County Transportation Authority, which is responsible for governing the location, expansion and building of all roads, highways and freeways including the transit systems within Orange County. Prior to her election, Ms. Brewer was an executive assistant to Orange County Supervisor Thomas F. Riley. She advised him on matters pertaining to the state and county criminal justice systems including jails, probation, juvenile facilities, sheriff, district attorney and on all fiscal issues. Marilyn served as executive producer and host of a weekly cable television program, "Politically Speaking" for the past eight years. In addition, Ms. Brewer is the founding chairman of the Orange County Coalition for Comprehensive Mental Health Services, which directs and reforms the delivery of mental health services in the County. In 1963, Marilyn Brewer founded and remains a principal in C. Brewer Company, a plastics injection molding company that manufactures high precision components for the medical and computer industries. She currently serves on the board of directors and is the corporate secretary/treasurer. From 2001 - 2004, Marilyn served as an ambassador to The University of California Irvine Foundation. She is a member of the UCI College of Medicine Dean's Advisory Council. She has served as a board member and president of the Mariposa Women's Center, is a charter member of the Seneca Network and is founding president of Women in Leadership. In 1987 she established and continues to sponsor a scholarship at the California State University, Fullerton, for a re-entry student seeking a teaching credential. Marilyn earned a degree from Fullerton College in 1983. She is a life member of Beta Sigma Phi and Alpha Gamma Sigma. She has four sons, three daughters-in-laws and seven grandsons. She resides in Newport Beach and enjoys golf, bridge and travel. |
